Reasons why “living for the weekend” is affecting your wellbeing

So what exactly is living for the weekend?

Living for the weekend is when you have a 9-5 job that you put up with it because it pays the bills. Often you don’t have any meaningful hobbies which means you get to the weekend and haven’t planned how you will spend your time. Your activity is limited to unhealthy social activities such as alcohol binges and in some cases the use of illicit substances. You get to end of the weekend feeling rubbish and usually it’s because you haven’t achieved much during the weekend.

The longer you remain stuck in this dysfunctional cycle, the worse your mental well being is in the long term. 

Here are five signs you are living for the weekend

  1. You work hard during the week and the only thing you look for is the weekend. Your work gives you routine and meaning. Your job may not excite you, but at least it pays the bills, but it gives you routine.
  2. You get to the weekend and whilst you looked forward to it, you haven’t planned anything. Your mod tends to drop at that point.
  3. You may have planned some activities for the weekend, but you haven’t found those activities fulfilling in any way. All you have done is go through the motions.
  4. You don’t have any meaningful hobbies outside of your work.
  5. You may have gone out with friends on a heavy night out and drunk excess amounts of alcohol during the weekend but got to Sunday feeling you haven’t achieved much, on top of that with a hangover to deal with, resulting in feelings of low mood.

Here are things to consider….

Living for the weekend is damaging in the long-term because of the impact this has on your mood and overall well being. The longer you stay in this cycle the more problematic it becomes for your mental wellbeing. You can start to break this cycle by creating meaning for yourself outside of your work. Find your meaning through being intentional and purposeful in the activity that toy do, and this activity should be a positive balance of social and personal hobbies.
